There is an old saying among touring crews: "You can hammer a nail into a stage deck with an SM58, plug it into the console, and it will still sound like an SM58."
Introduced in 1965 (SM57) and 1966 (SM58), these two unassuming black cylinders have survived every trend, digital modeling revolution, and boutique condenser wave. Go to a local dive bar, a 70,000-seat stadium festival, or the White House press briefing room, and you will see the same Shure microphones. Here is why they remain the undisputed kings of the audio world.

1. The Secret Sauce: The Unidyne III Capsule
Both the SM57 and SM58 share the exact same internal moving-coil cartridge: the Unidyne III, designed by Shure engineer Ernie Seeler. What made this capsule historic wasn't that it sounded like a $5,000 laboratory condenser—it was that it sounded predictable, consistent, and mix-ready.
- The Presence Peak (4 kHz - 6 kHz): Human speech and vocal intelligibility live right between 3 kHz and 6 kHz. The Unidyne III has a natural +4 to +5 dB presence boost built into its mechanical chamber. When a singer talks or sings into a 58, their voice automatically cuts through a dense wall of guitars and drums without needing 10 dB of console treble boost.
- The Pneumatic Shock Mount: Ever tapped a cheap microphone and heard a deafening THUMP through the subwoofers? The SM58's capsule doesn't touch the metal handle—it floats in an internal air-cushioned rubber bladder that swallows handling noise and stand rumbles.
2. SM57 vs. SM58: What is the Actual Sonic Difference?
Under the hood, they use the exact same motor. But their physical grilles change the acoustic loading:
- The SM58 (Ball Grille with Foam): The spherical steel mesh keeps the singer's mouth roughly 23 mm away from the diaphragm, controlling proximity effect and diffusing plosive "P" and "B" wind blasts.
- The SM57 (Rotating Plastic Cap): The protective cap allows you to place the diaphragm just 3 mm away from a guitar amp speaker cloth or snare drum rim. This allows you to exploit extreme proximity effect for thick low-end, while the lack of dense foam gives the SM57 a slightly brighter, punchier transient click at 5.5 kHz.
3. Why the SM57 is the King of Snare Drums & Guitar Amps
- The Snare Drum Crack: When a drummer hits a snare rimshot, the sound pressure can easily spike past 145 dB SPL. A delicate condenser might clip its internal electronics, but the SM57 simply laughs, takes the hit, and rounds off the harsh attack into a punchy, satisfying crack that sits right on top of the mix.
- Electric Guitar Cabs: Aim an SM57 directly where the speaker dust cap meets the cone, pull it 1 inch back from the grille cloth, and you have 95% of every classic rock, metal, and blues guitar tone recorded in the last 50 years.
4. Maintenance & Tour Life: Cleaning a Funky 58
After months on tour, an SM58 grille will accumulate sweat, beer, and spit. Don't throw it away:
- Unscrew the silver ball grille counter-clockwise.
- Remove the internal foam windscreen from inside the mesh.
- Wash the metal mesh and foam in warm water with mild dish soap (or a disinfectant wash).
- Let both parts air dry completely before reassembling (never screw a wet grille back onto the capsule!).
