On a busy festival stage with a 15-minute changeover, you don't have time to second-guess yourself. If your gain staging is sloppy, you'll spend the entire show fighting digital clipping distortion, muddy channel summing, and noisy preamp hiss.
Here is the proven pre-show routine used by touring engineers to lock in clean gain staging and avoid catastrophic pops and blown speaker horns.
1. Digital Gain Staging: The -18 dBFS Sweet Spot
On old analog consoles, you set preamp gain so meters hovered around 0 VU (+4 dBu). On modern 24-bit digital consoles (Yamaha CL5, Allen & Heath dLive, DiGiCo, Behringer X32/Wing), 0 dBFS means absolute digital hard clipping.
- The Target: When setting input preamp gain during line check, adjust the analog trim knob so average musical levels hover around -18 dBFS to -14 dBFS on your channel meter.
- The Headroom Safety Margin: Transient peaks should never exceed **-6 dBFS**. This leaves 12 to 18 dB of clean headroom for when the drummer or singer gets excited during the live show.
2. The +48V Mute-First Rule (Protect Your Speakers)
Engaging +48V phantom power sends a direct current surge down the XLR line. If the channel is unmuted, this produces a massive DC pop through your sound system that can blow stage monitor horn diaphragms or damage FOH compression drivers in a fraction of a second.
Rule: ALWAYS mute the channel (and DCA/Mute Group) before turning +48V on or off.
3. The 10-Minute Pre-Show Line Check Checklist
- Visual Physical Check: Inspect all mic clips, tighten boom arms, and confirm wireless mic batteries are fresh.
- Line Verification: Talk into each mic from the stage (or scratch the grille) to confirm Snake Channel 1 is actually Kick In, Channel 2 is Kick Out, etc.
- Phantom Power Audit: Verify +48V is turned ON for active condensers (Overheads, Hi-Hat, active DIs) and OFF for passive ribbon mics.
- Gain Trim Calibration: Have the band play at gig volume and set channel gains to nominal -18 dBFS.
- Engage High-Pass Filters: Engage HPFs across all vocal mics (80-120 Hz) and instrument channels (except Kick and Bass) to eliminate low-end stage rumble.
- Snare Polarity Check: Flip the Snare Bottom polarity switch ($arnothing$) and confirm the low-mid punch increases.
