With 8 to 16 open microphones placed in close proximity to a single, explosive acoustic source, the laws of acoustic wave propagation dictate that every drum hit bleeds into adjacent microphones at slightly different arrival times. If phase relationships are ignored, this acoustic time offset causes severe **Comb Filtering**—resulting in a weak, hollow kick drum with no sub punch, a thin snare drum that disappears in the mix, and smeared cymbal transients. Let’s explore the essential phase-alignment techniques every mixing engineer must master.
1. Snare Top vs. Snare Bottom: The Mandatory Polarity Flip
Miking a snare drum with both a top mic (capturing the stick attack and body) and a bottom mic (capturing the high-frequency sizzle of the snare wires) is a live sound standard. However, consider the physical movement of the drum heads:
- When the stick strikes the top head, the top head moves **downward (away from the top mic)**, creating a negative pressure wave.
- At that exact instant, the bottom head is pushed **downward (toward the bottom mic)**, creating a positive pressure wave.
Because the heads move in the same direction relative to space, the two microphones receive opposite acoustic polarities. **You must invert the electrical polarity ($\varnothing$ button) on the Snare Bottom channel.** If you don't, the low-end punch of the snare will cancel out completely when both channels are unmuted!
2. Dual Kick Mics: Kick In (Boundary) vs. Kick Out (Dynamic/Sub)
Modern live mixing often pairs an internal boundary mic (Shure Beta 91A inside the shell for beater transient attack) with an external dynamic or large-diaphragm mic (Audix D6, Shure Beta 52A, or Solomon SubKick outside the resonant port for low-end sub thud):
- The Arrival Time Offset: The Beta 91A sits 6 to 10 inches closer to the beater head than the external mic. Sound travels that distance in approximately **0.5 ms to 1.2 ms**.
- The Alignment Fix: Zoom into your console’s input delay channel. Delay the **Kick In** channel by approximately **0.8 ms** so its beater transient aligns sample-accurately with the Kick Out mic.
- Polarity Check: Listen to the low-end weight around 60 Hz to 80 Hz. Toggle the polarity on Kick Out—choose the setting that produces the deepest, punchiest low-frequency impact.
3. Overhead Miking & The 3:1 Distance Rule
Overhead microphones should not just be "cymbal mics"—they capture the entire acoustic picture of the drum kit. To prevent phase smearing between close mics (toms, snare) and overheads:
- Spaced Pair (A/B): Always measure the physical distance from the center of the snare drum to the left overhead capsule and the right overhead capsule with a measuring tape or mic cable. Keep these distances **strictly identical** so the snare image remains dead-center in the stereo field without phase flanging.
- The 3:1 Rule: The distance between the two overhead microphones should be at least three times the distance from each microphone to the nearest cymbal source, minimizing destructive acoustic cross-bleed.
4. Polarity Auditing Workflow During Line Check
- Start with the Kick In mic. Bring in Kick Out and toggle polarity—keep the position with the biggest sub bass.
- Solo Snare Top. Bring in Snare Bottom and flip polarity—ensure the 200Hz body reinforces rather than disappears.
