Miking an acoustic drum kit is where amateur mixes fall apart. You are trying to mic 10 different loud, percussive acoustic sources positioned mere inches from each other. If your mic placement is off by even an inch or you forget a simple phase flip, your kick and snare will sound like wet cardboard boxes fighting for survival in the mix.

Here is the proven, gig-tested blueprint to capturing a punchy, tight, modern drum sound in both live venues and the recording studio.

1. The Kick Drum: The Kick In / Kick Out Strategy

A great kick drum sound needs two elements: low-end sub thump (50-80 Hz) and transient beater click (3-5 kHz). Trying to get both from one microphone is a compromise. The pros use two mics:

A. Kick Inside (The Beater Click & Attack)

  • Top Choices: Shure Beta 91A (Boundary Condenser) or Audix D6.
  • Placement: Place the boundary mic flat on the internal pillow or shell, pointed 2 to 3 inches away from where the beater hits the head.
  • Tone: Delivers instant slap, snap, and sub-click that cuts through loud stage monitors without feedback.

B. Kick Outside (The Sub-Bass Body)

  • Top Choices: Shure Beta 52A, AKG D112 MKII, or Audix D6.
  • Placement: Halfway inside the resonant port hole (or 2 inches outside the head), angled $45^circ$ away from the direct air puff.
  • Tone: Captures the deep, resonant low-frequency boom that moves air in the subwoofers.

2. The Snare Drum: Why You ALWAYS Flip Phase on Snare Bottom

  • Snare Top (Body & Crack): Put an SM57 or Telefunken M80 1.5 inches above the rim, angled $45^circ$ toward the center of the head. Position the back of the mic pointing straight at the hi-hat to use its rear null to reject hi-hat bleed.
  • Snare Bottom (Sizzle & Wires): Point a small condenser (e.g. Rode NT5) or SM57 directly at the snare wires 2 inches below the bottom head.

The Golden Rule of Snare Miking

When the drummer hits the snare, the top head moves away from the top mic (negative voltage), while pushing the bottom head toward the bottom mic (positive voltage). The two microphones are capturing opposite electrical polarities!

Action: Press the Phase Invert ($ arnothing$) button on the Snare Bottom channel. The low-mid punch (200 Hz) will instantly snap into focus with huge weight!

3. Rack & Floor Toms: 2 Finger-Widths & Cymbal Rejection

  • Mic Choices: Sennheiser e604 / e904, Sennheiser MD421, or Audix D2/D4.
  • Placement: Clip the mic 2 finger-widths above the rim, angled $45^circ$ toward the center of the drumhead.
  • Angle Away from Cymbals: Always aim the rear null of cardioid tom mics directly at the nearest crash cymbal or hi-hat to prevent high-frequency spill from leaking into your tom gates.

4. Drum Overheads: The Famous "String Trick"

Whether you choose Spaced Pair (A/B) or ORTF for your overheads, the snare drum must sit dead center in the stereo field without phase smearing.

How to do the String Trick:

  1. Take a piece of XLR cable or string. Hold one end tightly at the dead center of the snare drum head.
  2. Pull the other end to your Left Overhead capsule. Pinch the cable at that exact distance.
  3. Pivot the cable over to your Right Overhead capsule without changing the length. Adjust the right mic stand until the capsule touches the exact same point on the cable.

Now, the sound of the snare drum hits both overhead mics at the exact same microsecond, locking your snare firmly in the center of the stereo mix!
