At freezing (0°C), sound travels at 331.3 m/s. At a standard 20°C (68°F), it is 343.4 m/s. On a hot outdoor festival day at 35°C (95°F), the speed increases to 352.5 m/s. While a few milliseconds seem trivial, over long distances (like throwing to delay towers 100 meters away), temperature fluctuations will ruin a static alignment. System techs must monitor the thermometer and adjust delay values accordingly.

To find the necessary delay time, use this core equation:

Delay (ms) = (Distance / Speed of Sound) × 1000

For quick calculations at 20°C (343.4 m/s), sound takes about 2.91 milliseconds to travel 1 meter (or 0.88 milliseconds to travel 1 foot). You can simplify this in the field to:

4. Real-World Case 1: The Delay Tower

Imagine mixing an outdoor show. The Main PA is at the stage. The delay tower is set up 60 meters back, and FOH is 20 meters from the stage. The goal is to align the delay tower with the Main PA at the delay tower location.

First, calculate the difference in distance from the stage to the delay tower. The main PA sound has already traveled 60 meters by the time it reaches the tower. The delay tower speaker is at 0 meters relative to its own position. The difference is:

60m (Main PA distance) - 20m (already covered by main PA at reference point? No, difference from source to delay location: 60m - 0m = 60m)

Wait, let's look at the acoustic arrival. The sound from the Main PA travels 60 meters to reach the delay tower. The sound from the delay tower travels 0 meters to get to the same location. The distance offset is 60 meters. To find the delay:

60 meters × 2.9 ms/m = 174 ms

If we also factor in the Haas Effect (Precedence Effect), we might add a tiny offset (5 to 15 ms) to bias the localization back to the stage, making it sound like all the energy is coming from the main band, even though the delay tower is doing the heavy lifting.

5. Real-World Case 2: Front Fill Alignment

Front fills are placed at the lip of the stage to cover the front rows where the main line arrays shoot over the audience's heads. If the main arrays are flown 8 meters away from the front row, and the front fills are on the stage deck just 2 meters away, the sound from the front fills will arrive first.

The distance difference is 8m - 2m = 6 meters. Multiply the offset by our constant:

6 meters × 2.9 ms/m = 17.4 ms

Apply 17.4 ms of delay to the front fills to align their acoustic arrival with the main PA wavefront.

6. Real-World Case 3: Subwoofer Alignment

Aligning subwoofers to mains is critical for a punchy crossover region. If your subwoofers are placed on the ground 1.5 meters in front of the main flown array, the sub energy arrives first, causing phase cancellation at the crossover frequency.
