It is the most stressful moment in any audio engineer's day. The loud, chaotic rock set just ended. The lead singer grabs an acoustic guitar, walks alone to the downstage edge, and the crowd goes dead silent. He cups the vocal mic in his hands, leans into the wedge, and starts to talk. Suddenly, you hear it—a faint, low-mid hum that rapidly builds into a terrifying squeal: feedback. You have about two seconds to stop it before the entire audience turns around, glares at the FOH booth, and blames you for ruining the show.
If your eyes immediately dart down to the RTA screen on your digital console, you have already lost. By the time the RTA registers the frequency spike and your brain translates the screen into a physical movement on the EQ, the feedback is howling. Great live sound engineers don't mix with their eyes; they mix with their ears. If you want to survive in the high-pressure world of live audio, you need to be able to hear a ringing frequency, identify it instantly, and grab the correct EQ knob without looking. Let’s talk about ear training, frequency mnemonics, and how to stop guessing.
Why the "Boost and Sweep" Method is a Crutch
When inexperienced engineers hear a nasty ring, they often use the "Boost and Sweep" method. They grab a parametric EQ band, narrow the Q, boost the gain by +10dB, and sweep it across the spectrum until the problem gets drastically worse. Then, they cut it. While this works in a low-stakes rehearsal, doing this during a live show is audio malpractice. If you sweep a +10dB boost across the vocal channel while the singer is performing, you are assaulting the audience's ears and accelerating system feedback. You have to learn how to identify the problem by ear without making it worse first.
Breaking Down the Frequency Spectrum (The Mental Cheatsheet)
The human ear can hear from roughly 20Hz to 20,000Hz. Trying to memorize thousands of numbers is impossible. Instead, you need to break the audio spectrum down into zones, and assign real-world descriptive words to each zone:
- The Mud & Rumble (20Hz to 80Hz): You don’t usually hear this range as a tone; you feel it. If a stage is hollow and the kick drum is vibrating the floorboards, it usually lives here. It sounds like a passing freight train.
- The Boom (100Hz to 200Hz): If the mix sounds thick, muddy, or like it has a heavy blanket over it, this is your culprit. Feedback in this range doesn't squeal; it hums aggressively. A 160Hz ring in a monitor wedge sounds like someone blowing across the top of a giant glass jug.
- The Box & The Honk (250Hz to 500Hz): This is the most problematic area in small venues. 250Hz sounds exactly like singing into a cardboard box. 400Hz to 500Hz is the classic "Honk." If your snare drum sounds like a basketball bouncing on concrete, you have a buildup in the 400Hz range.
- The Telephone (800Hz to 1.5kHz): This is where human speech intelligibility lives. If you have a ring at 1kHz, it sounds like an old rotary telephone dial tone. It is a very persistent, annoying hum that sits right in the front of your face.
- The Icepick (2kHz to 4kHz): The human ear is most sensitive to frequencies around 3kHz because that is the resonant frequency of our ear canal. A feedback ring at 2.5kHz or 3.15kHz feels like a physical icepick stabbing into your eardrum. If a vocal sounds harsh, painful, or grating at high volumes, grab a surgical EQ and pull out 2.5kHz.
- The Edge and Sibilance (5kHz to 8kHz): Feedback up here is a high-pitched, piercing squeal. It sounds like a referee blowing a metal whistle. This is also where vocal sibilance lives. If the singer’s "S" and "T" sounds are tearing your head off, you need to de-ess or cut around 6kHz to 8kHz.
How to Train Your Ears
Reading about frequencies will not make you better at identifying them. You have to practice. And crucially, you should not practice while you are getting paid to mix a gig. The best way to train your ears is to use a dedicated ear training tool. Start simple: set the tool to generate a random tone and guess which of the main frequency bands it belongs to (e.g., Low, Low-Mid, High-Mid, High).
Once you can nail that 100% of the time, narrow the field. Test yourself on standard octave bands (63Hz, 125Hz, 250Hz, 500Hz, 1k, 2k, 4k, 8k, 16k). Listen to the tone, use the mental cheatsheet above (e.g., "That sounds like a dial tone, so it must be 1k"), and verify. Finally, move to 1/3-octave bands. This matches the 31 bands on a standard Graphic EQ. When you can instantly hear the difference between a 2kHz ring and a 3.15kHz ring, you have officially leveled up as an audio engineer.
You won't have to look at the screen anymore. You will hear a ring start to swell, your hand will naturally drift over to the exact knob on the console, and you will cut it before the audience even realizes something was wrong.
